The Telangana State Waqf Board (TGWB) got a relief with the Waqf Tribunal, while hearing an original application (OA), permitting a three month extension for the UMEED portal. The extension will allow continued registration and verification of connected documents uploaded to the platform.

Speaking to The Hindu on Friday, TGWB Chairman Syed Azmatuallah Husseini said, “The tribunal gave us an extension of three months. Directions were also issued to the Government of India to make UMEED portal accessible for further activity.”

Officials said the extension will enable the registration of a larger number of waqf institutions. They stated that while gazette notified waqf institutions have already been registered on the portal, several others that are pending registration will now be able to complete the process.

In the recent past, two other bodies, the Association of TS Sajjadanasheen Mutawalli and Khidmatguzaran of Waqfs and the Telangana Dargah District Association, which represent hereditary sajjada nasheens who head religious institutions such as dargahs, had also filed separate original applications seeking similar relief. These applications were returned by the tribunal.

In the previous order, in which OAs were returned, the tribunal had maintained that mutawallis must enter details and upload data on the portal, and only they can seek an extension with valid reasons. The tribunal then had further noted that the Government of India notified the rules in the gazette on July 3 this year, and held that the period prescribed under Section 3 B (1) should be calculated from the date of this notification.
