Former IPS officer A.B. Venkateswara Rao, who is contesting for the post of Mayor of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) as an independent candidate with the support of the Congress, CPI, CPI-(M) and other parties, on Wednesday said comprehensive development of Vijayawada and finding effective solutions to the existing civic problems would be his priorities if elected as Mayor.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Rao outlined his development agenda, promising 24-hour drinking water supply, improved sanitation, better roads, and measures to address property tax and traffic problems.

He said special attention would be given to the removal of encroachments along the Budameru, construction-related issues and flood prevention through planned infrastructure measures. He assured residents that funding would not be a constraint, as development works could be taken up using municipal revenues and funds allocated by the Centre.

Emphasising transparent administration, Mr. Rao promised measures to curb corruption, improve accountability among officials and ensure the proper utilisation of public funds. He also said small businesses and street vendors would be supported without being subjected to unnecessary hardships.

He expressed concern that shortcomings in the political and administrative systems were contributing to corruption and tensions among caste groups, adding that these issues needed comprehensive attention. Public health and safety would also receive priority, he said, outlining plans to control mosquitoes, address issues of open drainage, monitor canals and prevent water stagnation. He promised improved safety at schools, Anganwadi centres, small shops and small industries, along with greater transparency in issuing licences and granting permissions.

Mr. Rao proposed developing night bazaars, food courts and street markets to create employment opportunities for young people and provide better facilities for small traders. Developing parks, pedestrian pathways and other public infrastructure would be part of his vision to make Vijayawada a clean, green and safe city, he said.

AP Congress vice-president and Administrative In-charge Kolanukonda Shivaji said Vijayawada had witnessed significant development under Congress rule and pledged the party’s full support to Mr. Rao.

CPM district secretary D.V. Krishna also expressed support for the candidate, stating that his party had consistently worked for the city’s development and would back him as the INDIA alliance candidate.
