The Velachery–Tambaram Road will get a new green space soon, with the beautification of the space beneath the Medavakkam flyover set to begin this week. Around 6,000 square metres of open space will be cleaned of filth gathered over the years, and will get two gazebos, granite seating arrangements, walkways for a length of 550 metres paved with interlocking bricks, a fountain, six sculptures and a lot of greenery. The sculptures will reflect Tamil culture.

Sources in the Highways department said that the first task was to remove mounds of earth dumped illegally, some rubbish and also remove a few squatters. “There are a total of seven bays under the flyover of these; two bays are being used by the CMRL to store their material. The beautification of these spaces will be taken up later.”

The beautification, that will be taken up at a cost of ₹1.90 crore, is expected to be completed in three months. Two borewells and a sump would be created to supply water to the plants. Different kinds of lighting will be provided so that walkways are adequately and clearly lit, and play areas are highlighted to make the space safe for all users.

“We want to put this space to good use, which is why there will be a children’s play area, a gym space with basic equipment and a designated parking space for two-wheelers. Access to each bay will be provided from either side, and a ramp will also be created to ensure that persons with disabilities can use it. The space under the Keelkattalai flyovers, too, has been provided with similar facilities.”

After the entire work is completed, maintenance would be handed over to the city roads division of the Highways Department, which maintains other such green spaces like the one beneath the Anna Flyover.
