The Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin  or VB-G RAM G) law,  which has replaced the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), is no measure of reform, according to Thannatchi, a civil society organisation specialising in issues of local bodies.

Calling the abolition of the MGNREGA an “autocratic act” of snatching away democratic and Constitutional rights that workers had obtained after years of toil, the civil society organisation contended that it had come out in the open that the Union government had wanted to “take away” the rights of the people instead of removing practical difficulties and strengthening the old law.

Thannatchi demanded the retention of the MGNREGA and the withdrawal of the VB-G RAM G law. It also called upon the State government to take legal steps for implementing the MGNREGA in Tamil Nadu, in addition to calling for protests on constitutional means till the new law was taken back.
