Almost 10 years after the lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq in Dadri, the Uttar Pradesh Government seeks to withdraw case against accused. Additional District Government Counsel, Gautam Buddha Nagar, had filed the withdrawal application in a local court.

“We filed the withdrawal application, issued by the government in connection with Akhlaq Ahmed’s case, before the concerned court on October 15. The court is yet to pass an order on the application and December 12 is fixed as the date for hearing the matter,” said Bhag Singh Bhati, Additional District Government Counsel (ADGC), Gautam Buddha Nagar, to local media. All the accused in the case who are presently out on bail are facing trial in the case.
The Assistant District Government Counsel, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Bhag Singh Bhati acted on the directions of the State Government through a letter dated August 26, 2025.
FIR for cow slaughter ordered against Dadri lynching victim Akhlaq’s family
The matter dates to September 28, 2015, when a mob gathered outside Akhlaq’s house after an alleged announcement from a village temple claiming that he had slaughtered a cow. Akhlaq and his son Danish, were dragged out of their home and assaulted until they fell unconscious. The victim died at a Noida hospital. The local police filed a First Information Report (FIR) under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder),147 (rioting), 148 (rioting with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 323 (assault), 504 (intentional insult to disturb peace), among others of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Jarcha police station.
The police filed a charge sheet against 15 people, including Vishal Rana, son of a local BJP leader, as main accused who helped the mob to Akhlaq’s house and assaulted the family.

The Congress reacted sharply over the U.P. Government move calling it dangerous trend with far reaching consequences. “This is a dangerous trend as the government has started pushing to withdraw case against accused involved in creating divide on religious lines and committing lynching. The incident was not an ordinary occurrence as right wing mob killed a Muslim and emboldened a small section of fringe group who believed in committing lynching against Muslims. But, in a State such as the Uttar Pradesh where Chief Minister withdraws cases against himself, such a step was coming. We condemn such action,” said Shahnawaz Alam, National Secretary, Congress.
