US to launch ‘economic D-Day’ against Iran, Treasury Secretary says administration is entering the ‘endgame’

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced that the United States is launching an “economic D-Day” against Iran. Stressing that the Trump administration has dismantled Iran’s military capabilities and buried its nuclear program, Bessent said this would be the single largest economic campaign ever deployed against an adversary. “President Trump has dismantled Iran’s military capabilities, destroyed nearly 100 per cent of its military factories, and buried its nuclear program…We are now entering the endgame. At dawn begins an economic D-Day – the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary,” he said in a post on X.

Full economic isolation

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the United States has entered the final phase of its pressure strategy against Iran. The US has already applied pressure through physical maritime blockades and military strikes on defensive production facilities and is now shifting focus toward secondary enforcement mechanisms.

“The President has created the conditions to leverage every agency, every authority and action many assumed we would never summon. Our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains the tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone,” he said.

Iran’s stern message

Meanwhile, the new head of Iran’s top security body has warned that Tehran will see any country’s support for new US economic measures against the Islamic Republic as an “act of war,”. The hard-line leader of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, has also stated that Iran would target other oil-shipping routes from the Persian Gulf – alternatives to the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s president defended MoU with the US

Amid all this, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is of the view that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in mid-June was the best way to move beyond a situation of “neither war nor peace.”

The interim deal opened a 60-day period for talks aimed at ending the war and reaching an accord on Iran’s nuclear program. That period ended last week with no signs of compromise or extension.

Also, Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir is expected to visit Iran as mediators try to revive talks.
