Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) Kerala State president Panakkad Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal has claimed that a United Democratic Front (UDF) government will come to power after this year’s Assembly polls in the State.

Opening a public meeting held as part of the ongoing State conference of the IUML’s trade union wing, the Swathanthra Thozhilali Union (STU), here on Sunday (February 1), he accused the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of succumbing to corporate interests. Mr. Thangal said that the government was not keen on bringing in new investments to the State. It was also implementing anti-labour policies and laws, following in the footsteps of the Union government. Many industrial units were being closed down. There were unhealthy tendencies in the agricultural sector as the farmers were not getting proper prices for their products. The government was not taking steps to boost their income, he claimed.

Mr. Thangal also alleged that the State government had been taking a hostile attitude towards protests by labour unions and cited the example of the strike by Accredited Social Health Activists. “This government will fall after the Assembly polls and the UDF will come to power,” he added. IUML national general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty, M. Rahmathulla, STU State president, among others, were present.
