V.V. Giridharan, UDF candidate contesting from the Kalarivathukal West ward of Valapattanam.

Even as candidates intensify house visits in their respective local body wards, V.V Giridharan, 70, Congress nominee in the Kalarivathukal West ward of the Valapattanam grama panchayat has already captured public attention. His distinctive long and white moustache, nurtured since his service in the army, has turned him into a social media sensation.

Mr. Giridharan aims to reclaim the ward lost to the BJP in the previous election. He says the moustache, a tradition and symbol of pride in the army, requires meticulous care but now people recognise him instantly during campaigning . His photos and reels have gone viral, drawing attention even beyond the ward.

New to electoral politics, Mr. Giridharan entered public life through his late brother-in law Janardanan, a former Congress ward member. He believes internal rifts aided the BJP’s earlier win. but is confident of securing a UDF victory this time.
