A section of two-wheeler riders at Pattukottai in Thanjavur district were in for a pleasant surprise on Thursday morning as they received 1 kg of tomato for the simple reason that they had their helmets on while riding the motorcycle.

According to sources, a team of Pattukottai traffic police wing personnel stopped those driving their two-wheelers wearing helmets and directed them to pull up on road kerb on the busy market road during morning peak hour.

Baffled by the action of the traffic police, some motorists tried to pick a wordy duel with the police. But they were surprised when they came to know the police had stopped them just to gift them 1 kg of tomato, selling around ₹40 to ₹45 a kg depending on the quality and variety at Pattukottai.

The police told them that the ‘gift’ was intended to create awareness on the need to wear helmets while riding two-wheelers, sources added.
