Two persons were arrested for stealing 1.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery and 40 grams of silver ornaments from a commuter at Arakkonam railway station in Ranipet on Saturday.

Police said the arrested persons were identified as B. Anita, 48, and N. Priya, 35. They are residents of Madurai. Initial inquiry revealed that the victim, S. Rajarajeshwari, 55, a resident of Avadi, visited a jewellery showroom in Arakkonam town to buy gold and silver items on October 1 as part of the festival season.

After buying jewellery items, Rajeshwari used the lift at the railway station to reach the platform for suburban trains. Despite the lift being crowded with women, she managed to reach the platform when she found that her purse with jewellery items was missing.

Immediately, she lodged a complaint with the Government Railway Police at the railway station. Special teams analysed the CCTV footage at the railway station and found four women leaving along with Rajeshwari from the lift on that day.

After tracking mobile tower signals and CCTV footage in the town area, police nabbed the duo and lodged them at a sub-jail in the town. Special teams formed to trace the other two women of the gang. Further probe is under way.
