Tamil Nadu’s Minister for School Education, Tamil Development, and Information and Publicity Rajmohan, on Tuesday (May 19, 2026), said the TVK government will follow the existing two-language policy in schools – Tamil and English. “Our government would not allow a three-language formula to be followed in schools. We will not yield to any indirect pressure and the TVK will remain steadfast, without any compromise, in its stand on the two-language policy,” he told The Hindu.

Mr. Rajmohan’s comments assume significance as the Union Ministry of Education had recently sent a reminder regarding the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme in Tamil Nadu.

To a question on the Supreme Court’s directive in December 2025 asking the Tamil Nadu government to identify land for establishing Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, the Minister said the matter is under discussion. “I have been discussing with the officials of the School Education Department regarding this issue. An appropriate decision will be taken,” he said.

The Minister said the infrastructure gaps in government schools will be addressed through public-private partnerships. “Education is the foundational strength for the development of Tamil Nadu. While the number of government schools is higher than private schools, enrolment in government schools is low. Measures will be taken to improve this,” he said.

Mr. Rajmohan, who is also the Minister for Archaeology, while responding to a question on whether his government would take steps to bring the Chola-era Anaimangalam copper plates (Leiden copper plates) to Tamil Nadu, he said, “The Anaimangalam copper plates were a treasure of Tamil Nadu.”

He added that the State government would take steps to bring them to Tamil Nadu and ensure that the plates were taken to various prominent places across the State for public display and educational purposes. He also said measures would be taken to house the copper plates in Thanjavur, the capital of King Raja Raja Chola I.

These copper plates, until a few days ago, were in the possession of Leiden University and were handed over to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to the Netherlands.

Further, responding to a question on whether his government would urge the Centre to release the reports of the first two phases of excavations conducted at Keeladi in Sivaganga district by the Archaeological Survey of India’s then Superintending Archaeologist Amarnath Ramakrishna, Mr. Rajmohan said, as far as preserving, protecting, and promoting Tamil heritage and culture were concerned, the TVK government would leave no stone unturned.

Recalling his journey from being a radio presenter and YouTuber to becoming the School Education Minister, Mr. Rajmohan said he had consistently remained a learner and was always open to learning. “I have journeyed with the media from working with a news channel, radio and then moving to YouTube. I will continue to learn with the officials and teachers while also sharing some experiences of mine,” he added.

School reopening, Class X results

Later, while addressing a press conference, the Minister said schools for classes I to III will reopen on June 4. For Class IV to XII, the schools will reopen on June 1.

The Minister also said the Class X public examination results will be released on Wednesday (May 20) at 9.30 a.m. at Anna Centenary Library.
