The Special task force of West Bengal police on Monday (June 8, 2026) arrested Trinamool Congress leader and candidate from Falta Assembly seat Jahangir Khan.

Jahangir Khan who was wanted in several cases of Falta police station under Diamond Harbour has been arrested at around 1430 hours from Panitanki Bazar (near Nepal border) under Kharibari Police station by the special task force, West Bengal in a joint raid with Darjeeling Police team. He will be produced before the Court on Tuesday (June 9, 2026).

According to police, Jahangir Khan was trying to flee the country from the bordering areas of West Bengal.

There was allegations of electoral malpractices against the Trinamool leader when polling was held at Falta in the second phase on April 29. The election was cancelled by the Election Commission and re-polling was held on May 21. Jahangir Khan had withdrawn from the contest at Falta re-poll on May 21 and has been on the run since the polling was held. BJP had won Falta seat with a margin of over one lakh votes.

Considered close to Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee, Jahangir Khan was an influential leader of Falta in South 24 Parganas. After the change of regime in the State, several villagers had raised allegations of land grab and extortion against Jahangir Khan.

Jahangir Khan, joins the long list of Trinamool leaders arrested after the BJP came to power in West Bengal. Last week the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had arrested Saokat Moolla, another influential leader and former MLA for his alleged role in a bomb blast in March 2026.

Hundreds of Trinamool Congress leaders, including former MLAs have been arrested on charges of corruption, extortion and other crimes after BJP came to power in the State.
