Concerns over lack of social acceptance, limited livelihood opportunities and difficulties in accessing government welfare schemes dominated a meeting between the transgender community and police officials in Hyderabad’s North Zone on Tuesday (December 23, 2025). Issues relating to the absence of identity cards and public complaints of alleged nuisance during social functions were also discussed.

The meeting was convened by Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Zone), S. Rashmi Perumal, and was attended by around 25 transgender persons residing and operating within the zone.

During the interaction, participants spoke about challenges faced by the community, including social exclusion and economic insecurity. Several members pointed out that delays in receiving transgender certificates and the non-availability of identity cards were preventing them from availing government welfare schemes and making it difficult to distinguish between local residents and outsiders.

Police officials also raised public complaints regarding intimidation and extortion during events such as marriages and house-warming ceremonies, where large sums were reportedly demanded in the name of blessings, leading to inconvenience and apprehension among the public.

Addressing the gathering, the DCP encouraged community members to come forward for skill development, learn new trades and take up self-employment as dignified and lawful means of livelihood. She assured them that their genuine grievances would be taken up with the relevant government departments for welfare support and rehabilitation.

The participants were advised against resorting to intimidation or extortion in any form, with police cautioning that continuation of such practices would not only affect public goodwill but also invite criminal action under the law.
