Uppal junction is a major traffic congestion point on the Inner Ring Road, where vehicles from northern, southern and eastern zones of the city converge with those arriving from Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri and Warangal.
Out-bound buses, and loaded trucks add to the chaos, turning the junction a veritable nightmare for commuters as well as the traffic police, especially during peak traffic hours.
Traffic solution proposed for the junction by way of an elevated corridor and two flyovers is still a long way ahead.
The elevated corridor which has been under construction between Uppal and Narapally since 2018, could take a minimum of one more year for completion if everything goes as planned.
Two more flyovers which were part of the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) have not even started due to lack of funds.
The expected date of completion keeps shifting further and further for the much publicised structure which was inaugurated by the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari way back in 2018.
While initially planned by the National Highways between Narapally and Uppal Junction on the Warangal Highway, the flyover proposal underwent modifications after the State government had undertaken to extend it across the junction to land towards Ramanthapur.
The project has been a victim of tedious delay, which was initially blamed on the contractor selected by the NHAI. Eventually, the contract was terminated and fresh tenders were called for.
On the State government’s side too the project experienced delays as a total RCC structure was found unsuitable for the height anticipated. The flyover portion needs to achieve a maximum height of 23 metres to steer clear of the Blue Line corridor of the Hyderabad Metro Rail between Nagole and Raidurgam. Hence, proposals were sent to the State government seeking approval for a composite structure with steel piers, which got a nod as recently as August 2025.
Land acquisition too proved to be another impediment. The project needs acquisition of properties from the Survey of India (SOI) and the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC). A letter has been addressed to the Ministry of Science & Technology seeking transfer of 8.04 acres of land from SOI at market price. Officials say that there has been some progress on this front now. A public notice has been issued under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 for nine properties of TGIIC.
These apart, the Uppal package of SRDP also contains two more parallel flyovers for the vehicles to and from LB Nagar to skip the ever choked Uppal junction. They too have a sizeable property acquisition component– 42 private properties besides further acquisition from SOI. Deadline for these two flyovers too is fixed as October, 2026, but it is highly unlikely that even their construction would start by that date, say sources.
