Deputy Commissioner of Mysuru G. Lakshmikant Reddy has issued orders to temporarily divert vehicular traffic from the old bridge to the new bridge across river Kabini along National Highway 766 near Nanjangud town to facilitate the reconstruction of the old bridge.

The National Highway 766 from the border of Kerala state towards Kollegal section near Nanjangud town has two major bridges across river Kabini, one of which is new and the other is old.

Traffic from Mysuru to Nanjangud currently moves over the newly constructed bridge while the traffic from Nanjangud to Mysuru is using the old bridge.

Pointing to the need for repair and reconstruction of the old bridge, which is in a deteriorated condition, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) sought the diversion of all vehicular traffic from the old bridge to the newly constructed bridge. The Superintendent of Mysuru district police has said there is no objection to temporarily convert the newly-constructed bridge into a two-day traffic bridge.

However, the Superintendent of Mysuru district police had recommended that the repair and reconstruction of the old bridge be taken up at the earliest, as there is a likelihood of congestion on the new bridge due to restriction of traffic on the old bridge, which may hinder smooth flow of vehicles.

Hence, the Deputy Commissioner of Mysuru, in an order dated March 31, directed that all vehicular traffic be diverted from the old bridge to the new bridge while also directing the Superintendent of Mysuru district police, officials of NHAI and tahsildar to install appropriate signboards along the route to draw the attention of people and motorists about the diversion of traffic.
