Three schoolgirls were reported missing after they did not return home from school in Thandrampattu village near Chengam town in Tiruvannamalai on Monday.

The police said A. Mahalakshmi, 15, A. Maheshwari, 14, and R. Nithya, 13, had left their house after their parents scolded them for not going to school for nearly a month.

The police said that as the girls’ parents stayed in Kerala for work as wage labourers, they visited home occasionally. The three children were under the care of Unnamalai, 65, who stayed at a rented house in Thandrampattu village. Two siblings Maheshwari and Maheshwari study in class X and IX respectively at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School, while Nithya is a class VIII student at the Government High School in the village.

The police said that the three girls were upset after their parents scolded them over phone for not going to school. Around 4 p.m , they left home in uniforms and did not return.

A case was registered by Thandrampattu police. Special teams were formed to find the children and a probe is under way.
