Trade union outfits in Kerala and workers from various public and private sector enterprises celebrated May Day in the State on Friday (May 1, 2026), expressing concern over the erosion of labour rights and the introduction of four labour codes replacing the 29 existing laws in the country.

In a message to the working class on May 1, celebrated as International Workers’ Day in honour of the working class and commemorating their struggles for fair wages and better working conditions, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that even as neoliberal policies that undermine workers’ rights sweep across India, the voices of protest are emerging from the labour sector, which is very hopeful.
