At least 39 dead in stampede at actor Vijay’s rally in Karur

At least 39 people died in a stampede at a rally addressed by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay in Karur on Saturday (September 27, 2025), as part of his State-wide political tour. The meeting, held at Velusamypuram, began at 7:20 p.m. and drew several thousand people who had been packed into congested roads since the morning, waiting to see and hear Mr. Vijay.

Officials yet to give a copy of detention order, no contact with Sonam Wangchuk, says his wife

A day after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) and taken to Jodhpur in Rajasthan, his wife said she was yet to get a copy of the order or speak to her husband. Gitanjali Angmo, Mr. Wangchuk’s wife, told The Hindu that she was told by the police on September 26, the day he was detained from his village, that they would make her speak to Mr. Wangchuk once he reached Jodhpur.

UN is gridlocked and needs reform, says Jaishankar at United Nations General Assembly

The United Nations is “gridlocked” and in dire need of reform, said External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, while delivering the government’s address to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Saturday (September 27, 2025). During his speech, Mr. Jaishankar criticised Pakistan for being a hub of terror, highlighted some of the challenges faced by the world today, including tariff uncertainty, and said India was ready to take on greater responsibilities at the UN.

BJP is enacting a ‘drama of patriotism’, says Uddhav Thackeray, questioning Sonam Wangchuk’s arrest

Calling the BJP a party which does ‘drama of patriotism’, Shiv Sena UBT president Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday (September 27, 2025) questioned the arrest of Leh-based activist Sonam Wangchuk. “Hindustan and Pakistan are going to play a match again [on Sunday]. This is the height of shamelessness. On one hand, the man who gives the technology to build solar tents for our Indian Army is being declared a traitor and put under arrest under the National Security Act. On the other hand, we are playing cricket with the country which actually sends terrorists in India. This is their drama of patriotism,” Mr. Thackeray said, addressing a press conference in Mumbai on Saturday (September 27, 2025).

Days after SC remarks, CBI arrests one of two cops in Madhya Pradesh custodial death case

An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Madhya Pradesh Police, one of the two officers accused in the custodial death of a tribal man in Guna district, was arrested on Saturday, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer said.

Opposition slams U.P. govt. over Bareilly violence, alleges bid to divide society

Opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday criticised the State government over the violence in Bareilly, alleging that an atmosphere of communal divide was being created to cover up governance failures. They warned that such incidents would deepen existing social fault lines and disrupt communal harmony. “Everyone has the right to show respect and love for his god. We say ‘I love Vishwanath’; the police action holds no legal value. The action is a well-thought-out strategy by the U.P. government to cover failures,” Ajay Rai, U.P. Congress president, said.

Airstrikes, shooting kill at least 44 people in Gaza as Israel ignores demands for ceasefire

Israeli strikes and gunfire killed at least 44 people across Gaza, health officials said on Saturday,(September 27, 2025) as international pressure grows for a ceasefire but Israel’s leader remains defiant about continuing the war. Among the dead were nine from the same family in a house in the Nuseirat refugee camp, according to staff at Al-Awda Hospital, where the bodies were brought. Five others were killed when a strike hit a tent for the displaced, according to Nasser Hospital, which received the dead.
