Telangana has made remarkable progress in organ transplantation, says Governor

Telangana has made remarkable progress in organ transplantation through initiatives such as the Jeevandan cadaver transplantation programme, Governor Jishnu Dev Varma said on Monday. He was speaking at Yashoda Hospitals, Hitec City, where the institution announced the successful completion of more than 300 kidney transplants in 36 months.

The Governor said the Jeevandan programme has played a pivotal role in enhancing community participation and awareness about organ donation. He added that regular annual training sessions for transplant coordinators have strengthened the State’s capacity to manage transplants efficiently.

At the event, he also felicitated kidney donors. Rajasekara Chakravarthi, head of Nephrology, said that Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) has emerged as a silent global health crisis. He noted that in India, nearly one in every 10 adults is affected by some form of kidney disease, and over two lakh people develop end-stage kidney failure each year, requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive. “Unfortunately, only a small percentage of patients receive transplants due to a lack of awareness, delayed diagnosis and shortage of donors,” he added.

“Each transplant is not just a medical success but a story of renewed hope and life,” said G.S. Rao, managing director of Yashoda Hospitals.
