A Fund of Funds for startups in Telangana, under consideration for some time, seems inching close to fruition with a senior official of the State government on Tuesday hinting at the rollout in January.
“We have decided to create a Fund of Funds of around ₹1,000 crore to begin with… [it] will be started somewhere in January,” Special Chief Secretary to IT Department Sanjay Kumar said, pointing to the challenges startups face in accessing funds.
Seeking to highlight how the Fund will be the latest in the series of measures of the State government to bolster the startup ecosystem, the senior official said access to finance would help place the enterprise in next orbit. “It is a work in progress… for this, we have partnered with one of the agencies. I will spell out the details soon,” he added.
Mr.Sanjay Kumar, who was speaking at the event in which IT Minister D.Sridhar Babu launched MeeSeva services on WhatsApp, said Telangana startup ecosystem is looking forward to initiatives for improving their access to funds. For the government, the Fund will build on the various other facilitating measures such as hand-holding and mentorship for the startups.
Startups working in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) space will be focus, he said, adding how such an emphasis will be in line with the State government’s aspirations to shape Telangana into as a leading AI hub globally. Apart from playing the role of an enabler, forging partnerships with leading firms such as Meta, the government is imparting AI training to select employees in all its departments. The idea is to train such in-house technology savvy staff, by roping in leading firms, into ‘AI champions’ who then in partnership with startups evolve AI-enabled solutions, he said.
