Schools in five districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, will remain closed on Wednesday (October 21, 2026), owing to heavy rain, according to district authorities.

The Collectors of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts have declared a holiday for schools, while a similar order has been issued in Ranipet district due to rain.

Several places in and around Chennai received heavy rainfall till 6 a.m. on Wednesday (October 21), according to Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) data. The weather stations in Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam recorded 12 cm and 11 cm of rainfall respectively, followed by Taramani (10 cm) Madhavaram (9 cm), Villivakkam and Nandanam (8 cm). Various other districts, including Coimbatore, Kancheepuram, Ramanathapuram Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari, also received rainfall.

Light to moderate rainfall is likely to continue at isolated places across several parts of the State until 10 a.m. on Wednesday (October 21), according to the latest weather update.

The districts likely to receive rainfall include Chennai, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanniyakumari.

A fresh system, over the Bay of Bengal, is likely to sustain intense rainfall across Tamil Nadu till October 26, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said.

It issued orange alerts for a few southern districts, including Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi, as they may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall up to 20 cm on Wednesday (October 21) and Thursday (October 22).
