Tamil Nadu likely to see scattered rain till June 30

Scattered rainfall, which may be heavy in some districts, is likely to continue till the end of June, while near-normal temperatures are expected to prevail across Tamil Nadu. June may end on a wet note, with the State likely to record surplus rainfall.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast that light to moderate rainfall would continue over the State, Puducherry and Karaikal area till Tuesday (June 30, 2026). North Tamil Nadu districts, including Chennai and its neighbouring districts, Vellore, Tirupattur and Ranipet, may experience rainfall of moderate intensity on Sunday (June 28). Gusty winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph would prevail.

Western Ghats districts, including the Nilgiris and Theni, may receive heavy rainfall on Sunday. Similar weather pattern may continue on Monday (June 29) as well. Officials of the RMC said the prevailing weather systems would keep the maximum temperatures near normal in the State till the month-end.

V.R. Durai, Head, Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, RMC, said an upper air circulation over west-central Bay of Bengal would influence wet weather over the State. Moreover, a trough along the north coastal Tamil Nadu would also trigger rainfall for a few days. However, there may be a drop in rainfall after June 30.

Cloud cover is expected to keep daytime temperatures near normal over the next few days. The southwest monsoon has been in its normal phase in the State. Most districts have received their normal share or surplus rainfall so far this June.

The State has recorded an overall rainfall of 67 mm — 44% more than its seasonal average since June 1. Districts including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Nilgiris and Tirupattur, have recorded a rainfall deficit, he said.
