Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday urged representatives of local bodies to take up rainwater harvesting, stating that it would replenish groundwater levels and provide long-term water security to villages.

The Chief Minister, who interacted with around 10,000 representatives of local bodies during a webinar, dedicated a major portion of his speech to cleanliness, sanitation, reduction in the use of plastics, waste management, disease prevention, and environmental protection.

Mr. Stalin said water scarcity was an important issue that required immediate attention. “There is a saying, ‘spending money like water’. But in reality, we have to use water as if we were spending money. Rainwater harvesting alone can prevent water scarcity,” he said. He also drew the representatives’ attention to global warming.

“We are not receiving adequate rainfall at the right time. Climate change is one of the reasons for this. We must create awareness among the public about this issue,” he said. The Chief Minister said the representatives should educate the public and create awareness on waste management and sewage treatment.

“You may wonder whether there is any need for the Chief Minister to speak about these issues. But if we pay attention to small matters, we will reap major benefits. Health is wealth, and it can be achieved only through sanitation,” he said.

‘Focus on sanitation’

Mr. Stalin stated that if medical officers and local representatives worked together, it would improve public health.

“There should be no laxity in keeping our villages clean,” he said, adding that everyone should keep their villages clean and reduce the use of plastic. “Do not litter on the streets. We have a responsibility as our village is like our home. Segregate bio-degradable and non-degradable waste,” he said.

The Chief Minister also advised local body representatives to prepare for the monsoon and ensure prevention of diseases such as dengue and chikungunya. “Take all precautions and ensure basic services such as water supply and electricity are not affected. Form committees comprising social groups and local residents to plan in advance for the monsoon. It will help reduce disasters during the rainy season,” he said.

Stressing the need for transparency in financial transactions and the management of local bodies, Mr. Stalin said the public should be informed about all expenditures. “Your suggestions in this meeting will be considered and implemented,” Mr. Stalin assured them.
