Tamil Nadu Congress Committee’s fact finding committee head, former MP, K. Jayakumar, said that the committee would investigate the anti-party activities by the party cadre during the recently-concluded Assembly elections after allegations surfaced that the party workers didn’t work for the party and its alliance partners.
Speaking to reporters, Dr. Jayakumar said that the committee would investigate and look into the allegations and present a report in 60 days.
“We are planning to touch every constituency and receive these complaints in person. We hope to conclude the exercise in less than 60 days. The committee has been empowered by the All India Congress Committee and we urge the party’s stakeholders to meet us, tell us your opinion and we would include it in our report. We would be happy if it results in the good of the party,” he said.
Dr. Jayakumar said that several complaints have been received by the high command.
“One can guess how many complaints we have received from our intent to form a committee to look into it. The AICC has decided to look into the matter thoroughly. Though elections are over, we want to look into it to ensure that this sort of thing doesn’t happen in future,” he said.
Recently, the V. Srinidhi, National Secretary, Youth Wing, who was also the party’s candidate in Singanallur assembly constituency, tendered her resignation from the party post and also the primary membership of the party after three AIADMK MLAs were inducted by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
She said, “During the election period, even though some members from my own party did not fully participate in campaigning and instead supported Vijay’s party, the alliance cadre and workers who stood with me remained firm till the end. Because of their hard work and commitment, I was able to secure 65024 votes from Singanallur constituency.”
Ms. Srinidhi also expressed her unease about having to shake hands with the person who defeated her in the election as the Congress quickly formed a post-poll alliance with the TVK-led by actor Vijay who didn’t win a simple majority despite being the single largest party in the State Assembly.
A senior TNCC leader expressed doubts over whether anything would come out of the committee’s findings. “This is just for name sake. Office-bearers had worked for TVK in many constituencies. Now we are in alliance with the TVK. What good can come out of this?” the leader asked.
