Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launches the free meal scheme for Chennai Corporation sanitation workers at a function organised at Kalaivanar Arangam, Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday (November 15, 2025) launched a free meal scheme for sanitation workers of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and made a slew of announcements, including that the meal scheme would be expanded to all corporations and municipalities from December 6.
Launching the scheme at a function organised at Kalaivanar Arangam, Mr. Stalin also announced that in all 200 wards of the Chennai Corporation, exclusive 300 sq. ft. lounges, along with changing rooms and restroom facilities, will be built for sanitation workers.
Mr. Stalin also distributed various welfare measures, including housing, to several sanitation workers.
He hailed the role played by them in keeping Chennai clean. “In times of any calamity — be it rain or shine, flood or cyclone — the city faces, your role is key in bringing Chennai back to normal. The environment is clean because of your tireless work,” Mr. Stalin said.
“Not just me, the entire Chennai Corporation is indebted and thankful for your dedicated service,” he said.
“The new scheme will provide nutritious meals, which will be served in clean lunch boxes to keep the food warm. The food will be served at buildings owned by local civic bodies located conveniently near your workplaces,” the Chief Minister said.
He also highlighted a slew of measures announced for the welfare of sanitation workers during the DMK regime.
Mr. Stalin said he was aware that sanitation workers had several requests and assured them that these would be fulfilled one by one, in a phased manner. He requested the workers to ensure that Chennai and Tamil Nadu remain clean.
“My dream is to safeguard the dignity and improve the quality of life of sanitary workers, so that their children may attain higher positions,” Mr. Stalin said in a post on X.
“People must act with self-discipline and keep public places clean. This is exactly how we can show gratitude to the sanitation workers who toil for us,” he said.
