Syro-Malabar Public Affairs Commission has stated that the misuse of provisions under anti-conversion laws being implemented in various States is against the Constitution.

It cited the case registered by the police in Sultanpur district limits in Uttar Pradesh against a few Christians, accusing them of forced religious conversion and on charges of having distributed Bibles.

The action taken by the police and the contentions of the prosecutor had invited criticism from the High Court of Allahabad, according to a release issued here. The Commission said that the court observed that there was no evidence for conversion as alleged against them. It welcomed the interventions by the courts to ensure religious freedom and the protection of minority rights.

The Commission said governments need to ensure the religious freedom and minority rights as guraranteed in the Constitution.
