A 23-year-old student escaped an alleged rape attempt in Bengaluru’s Whitefield on June 2.

The incident took place in the limits of the Whitefield Police Station around 3.30 a.m. The woman was returning to her PG accommodation after stepping out for tea when the accused allegedly began following her.

According to the police, the accused identified as Saifal Mondal, 27, waylaid the woman on the road and allegedly tried to drag her to the other side of the street with the intention of sexually assaulting her. The victim raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents.

As neighbours rushed to the spot, the accused fled. The woman subsequently approached the Whitefield Police Station and lodged a complaint.

Acting swiftly, the police registered an FIR and launched a search operation. By the same night, the police traced and arrested Mondal, a rag picker who frequented the area. He was later produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.

Investigators said the accused allegedly targeted the woman after noticing that she was alone.
