Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will inaugurate Ranipet’s first car manufacturing plant at the SIPCOT complex in Panapakkam village on February 9.

Minister for Handlooms and Textiles and Ranipet MLA R. Gandhi, accompanied by Ranipet Collector J.U. Chandrakala and Superintendent of Police Ayman Jamal, inspected the preparatory work being undertaken by the district administration for the event. “Civic improvements such as relaying of the bitumen stretch to the SIPCOT complex, and removal of uneven speed-breakers are being done for the CM’s visit,” a State Highways official said. The project is estimated to cost ₹9,000 crore.

The Minister also inspected work on the construction of the administrative office of SIPCOT at a cost of ₹18.67 crore.

Spread across 470 acres inside the SIPCOT complex, the car manufacturing plant of JLR and Tata Motors will be the first such facility in the country to manufacture the luxury models of JLR, a brand owned by Tata Motors that specialises in electric vehicles. Other models of Tata Motors would also be manufactured at the facility. All components for cars would be made at the unit, which would cater to domestic as well as international consumers. The facility would provide around 5,000 direct and indirect jobs in the coming years, revenue officials said.

Around 1,200 acres of land from Agavalam, Thuraiyur, Nedumpuli, and Peruvalayam that come under Nemili panchayat union was acquired for the project. Of this, the manufacturing plant covers around 470 acres. A ₹400-crore footwear manufacturing park is being built in the remaining space on the SIPCOT premises.

The footwear park is expected to generate around 20,000 jobs, mostly for women. It would also enable leather manufacturers in the region to reduce the import of raw materials such as soles, heels, and synthetic materials from China, and solve logistical issues, officials said.
