Minister for Infrastructure & Investments B.C. Janardhan Reddy has said that the modalities for forming a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for setting up a mega shipbuilding cluster at Dugarajapatnam in Tirupati district are being worked out with the Central government.

Replying to a question posed by by MLAs N. Eswara Rao and Kamineni Srinivas in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, Mr. Janardhan Reddy said that the State government had issued guidelines under the Maritime Policy for promoting the shipbuilding cluster and announced financial incentives, exemptions and subsidies.

Land was being allotted for the project on a long-term lease under the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board policy and the necessary clearances were being given through the single window, he said.

Apart from the proposed shipbuilding facility, Mr. Janardhan Reddy said potential shipbuilding and repair centres were planned by the government in Bapatla, Nellore, Krishna, Srikakulam and Kakinada districts.

Anakapalli MLA Konathala Ramakrishna said Andhra Pradesh used to have a shipbuilding centre at the Hindustan Shipyard in Visakhapatnam but due to losses incurred over a period of time, it was merged with the Navy.

Opportunities in the shipbuilding sector in AP have since gone begging. The government should realise the untapped potential of the State’s 1,053-km coastline by setting up shipbuilding units in addition to greenfield ports and fishing harbours, he suggested.
