HYDERABAD

The Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Ltd (TGSPDCL) has decided to replace the existing transformers with high-capacity ones in the substations and distribution lines registering high load-growth, with 16 MVA capacity power transformers in the substations and lines with 1,000 kVA distribution transformers in place of 500 kVA ones.

The decision was taken at a review meeting jointly held by the authorities of the TGSPDCL and Telangana Transmission Corporation Ltd (TG-Transco) here on Friday and chaired by Chairman and Managing Director Md. Musharraf Faruqui and Directors of the two utilities. Existing transformers, both PTRs and DTRs, would be replaced with high-capacity ones in the areas registering high load growth, as part of plans to meet the growth in demand during the coming summer season.

Mr. Faruqui stated that the peak power demand next year (summer season) was expected to increase in the range of 19,500 megawatt to 20,000 MW and the demand in the Greater Hyderabad region was likely to be 5,000 MW. It was being planned to upgrade 3,866 distribution transformers (DTRs) and 431 power transformers (PTRs) to handle such an increase in the demand in the Southern Discom areas, he noted.

He explained that the capacity of power transformers would be increased at substations in Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Manikonda, Gachibowli, Medchal, Shivaram Pally, Medipally, Patancheru, R.C. Puram, Bollaram, Borapatla, Narsapur and Palamakula areas.

The distribution company had taken technical steps to utilise available land efficiently and as part of it the Discom had decided to install 1,000 kVA distribution transformers for the first time to overcome the shortage of space. In the Greater Hyderabad areas, 500 kVA DTRs currently registering over 70% of the load capacity would be replaced with 1,000 kVA transformers.

Similarly, 33/11 kV substations, mostly in the Greater Hyderabad limits, would be equipped with 16 MVA high-capacity PTRs. He noted that installation of the large-capacity transformers would significantly mitigate the issue of space constraints. The CMD instructed the officials to meet field-level engineers in high-demand areas, study local conditions and prepare detailed plans within a week.

TG-Transco Directors G. Sampath Kumar and D. Latha Vinod, TGSPDCL Directors Narasimhulu and Shivaji, Transco Chief Engineers Chiranjeevi and Vasudeva Rao, Discom CEs Pandya, Narasimha Swamy, Bala Swamy, Anand, Kamesh and Prabhakar and others participated.
