The Chennai police have registered one more case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against Gem Granites chairman R. Veeramani.
The case was registered on the basis of statements given by two minors stating that they were sexually abused by the businessman. The allegations were clubbed and probed as one case. With this, the police are investigating the alleged exploitation of 10 minor girls in all the six cases, police sources said on Sunday. This is the sixth case registered under the POCSO Act against the octogenarian, who has also been booked in a case of abetment of suicide of a minor in 2004, the sources said.
Investigators will take custody of Mr. Veeramani in the second POCSO Act case soon. He was examined by the police in the first case, in which video evidence was available and the complainant, who remained unidentified for long, was eventually identified by the police. Meanwhile, a search was launched on the residential premises of Veeramani on Lloyd’s Road at Royapettah. Acting on specific information, the police conducted the searches, the sources said. “We have filed a request in the designated court requesting custody of the accused for questioning in another case,” a senior police officer said.
Mr. Veeramani and his associates were arrested in the first case and lodged at Puzhal Central Prison. They were later detained under the Goondas Act. The accused would be formally arrested in all other cases, the sources said.
