The arrest of two brothers from Elkapally village in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district by the Mumbai Crime Branch police late on Tuesday night in connection with theft of a rifle from Navy Nagar in Mumbai of Maharashtra has sent shockwaves in the village.

According to police sources, the arrested siblings were identified as Dubbala Rakesh, 22, an Agniveer presently working in Kerala, and his brother Umesh, 25, natives of Elkapally in Penchikalpet mandal.

On September 6, 2025, Rakesh, impersonating naval personnel, allegedly approached a junior sailor on sentry duty at Navy Nagar in Mumbai and fled with an INSAS rifle and ammunition in connivance with his brother Umesh, police said.

The Mumbai Crime Branch police traced the duo to their native place and subsequently arrested them based on technical analysis.

Police sources said that the stolen INSAS rifle and ammunition were recovered from them. The arrested siblings were shifted to Mumbai to produce them in the local court. Further investigation is under way to ascertain the exact motive behind the incident.
