The leaders and workers of the Janata Dal (Secular) staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Shivamogga, opposing the transfer of specialist doctors from the community health centres at Holalur, Ayanur, and Holehonnur in the Shivamogga Rural constituency.

The party workers, led by MLA Sharada Puryanaik, raised slogans opposing the State Government’s proposal to community health centres in rural areas. They demanded the government reinstate specialist doctors in the centres and ensure rural people get quality health services.

Ms. Puryanaik, speaking on the occasion, stated that the government had decided to strengthen the taluk hospitals by closing the CHCs. “My constituency is a rural constituency with no taluk centres. Closure of the CHCs in my constituency will deny the people quality health service. I raised the issue during the legislature session and requested Health Minister Dinesh Gundurao ensure the CHCs continue in my constituency. However, the government has transferred the specialists,” she stated.

The legislator stated that people in rural areas could not reach big cities to consult specialist doctors. The government should consider the needs of the local people, she said.

The protesters submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti on the occasion.

Party’ district president Ramakrishna, Shivamogga Rural unit president Kasetti Sathish and other leaders led the protest.
