Shafi Parambil, MP, was injured in a police lathicharge at Perambra in Kozhikode on Friday evening following a face-to-face of United Democratic Front (UDF) and Left Democratic Front (LDF) workers in the town. He was admitted to a hospital in the city.

UDF workers took out a protest march in the city at night . Separate protests will be held at the block-level in the State on Saturday.

The incident is a fallout of the college union elections at CKG Memorial Government College in Perambra. While the Students Federation of India won the election bagging five of the six seats in the union, it lost the chairman post to the UDSF.

A victory rally of the UDSF in Perambra town led to a clash between the students’ unions on Thursday and several workers were injured. Following this, the UDF called for a hartal in Perambra town from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.

Meanwhile, the workers of Democratic Youth Federation of India took out a protest in the town alleging that the UDF workers attacked V.K. Pramod, president of Perambra panchayat, during their protest on Friday.

The two groups of protesters came face to face by evening resulting in an altercation. The police intervened using grenades, teargas and lathis to disperse the protesting groups.

Mr. Parambil was caught up among the protesters and sustained injuries on his face. Several UDF workers, including District Congress Committee president K. Pravin Kumar, were injured in the police action.

A few policemen including DySP Hariprasad were also injured as the protesters started hurling stones at them.

The situation in Perambra continues to be tense. A large team of police is camping in the locality. The UDF leaders claimed that the police used tear gas against them unilaterally.
