As U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor avoided any high-profile meetings in Ladakh, the embassy on Friday (August 21, 2026) termed the three-day tour of the envoy as a sign of “growing U.S.-India partnership through meaningful dialogue and cultural engagement”.

“Ambassador Sergio Gor wrapped up a visit to Srinagar and Leh this week, highlighting the growing U.S.-India partnership through meaningful dialogue and cultural engagement,” said the U.S. embassy in a post on X.

It said Ambassador Gor in Srinagar met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah “to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and later visited Leh to experience Ladakh’s culture and traditions.”

Earlier this week, Mr. Abdullah, during his meeting with the envoy in Srinagar, raised the issue of adverse travel advisory and potential engagement in the tourism sector, while stating “legacy issues were discussed.”

Official sources said Mr. Gor’s planned meeting with the visiting Dalai Lama failed to take place due to “unknown reasons”. Mr. Gor, however, visited the Thiksey Monastery, one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh.

Mr. Gor’s clubbed visit of J&K and Ladakh has assumed significance because the envoy is also the U.S.’s special envoy to South and Central Asia. Mr. Gor’s statement that J&K “is an important part of India” has already reflected a change in the U.S. administration towards the region, which it once considered as an “unresolved issue between India and Pakistan”.
