A second fisherman injured in the gas leak fire at a rented quarters near the Puthiyangadi harbour, has died on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Nigam Behra, 38, a native of Odisha. Earlier, Subhash Behra, 53, also from Odisha, had succumbed to injuries. Both were undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of the Government Medical College Hospital, Kannur. The accident occurred around 6 a.m. last Friday, when four fishermen sustained severe burns while cooking.

According to the police, the workers had forgotten to turn off the cylinder valve and stove the previous night which caused gas to spread inside the room. The blaze erupted when one of them unknowingly lit a beedi using a lighter.

Fire and rescue personnel, along with locals, rushed the injured to hospital. The other two fishermen, Shibha Behra and Jitendra Behra, are still under treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital.
