Second airport location will be in Bengaluru South, says Karnataka Chief Minister

Indicating that the location for the second airport for Bengaluru would be in Bengaluru South district, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Wednesday said he had directed the officials concerned to choose a location which requires lesser displacement of human settlements.

“We do not want the project to result in large-scale displacement. It’s ok if we have to rehabilitate only a few houses. I have asked the authorities concerned to pick a location which has lesser number of human habitations, lesser hills and that is technically feasible,” Mr. Shivakumar told media persons after holding a meeting with officials concerned on the proposal to set up a second airport for Bengaluru.

The Chief Minister also noted that another criteria was to choose the area where the land prices are not too high and the government would not face huge burden on account of compensation.

This was the first meeting held by Mr. Shivakumar on the proposed second airport after becoming Chief Minister. Incidentally Bengaluru South district is the home district of the Chief Minister.

A high-level team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had inspected three sites at Choodahalli and Somanahalli on Kanakapura Road, as well as another location on the Nelamangala-Kunigal Road in April 2025 and submitted the report to the government.

Though the government has chosen a Singapore consultancy to study the feasibility of all three shortlisted locations, sources in the government say that the two locations on Kanakapura Road were the favourites for being chosen.
