P. Raghu, chairman of the Karnataka State Commission for Safai Karmacharis, has said that the commission was established to take the grievances of the karmacharis to the government and ensure solutions.

“Karmacharis should consider themselves equal to others in society who protect their children with higher-quality education,” he said.

He was interacting with the karmacharis at a meeting held in Raichur on February 19 to hear their grievances.

Mr. Raghu advised the karmacharis to stay attached to society by barring thoughts of inequality and not comparing themselves with others. “Education can change anything and bring courage to one to lead a happy life. You all have to focus on providing education to your children to ensure a prestigious life for them,” he added.

S. Mareppa, state president of the Welfare Association of the Pourakarmikas, pushed for a review of the data entry process with regard to the deaths of pourakarmikas, as details of pourakarmikas under urban local bodies were entered incorrectly. He asked for assurance that benefits after the deaths of pourakarmikas properly reached their dependents.

The divisional conveyor of Dalit Samara Sene, Neelakant, opined that safai karmacharis will get government benefits only after they get identity cards. Thus, organisations under which karmacharis are working should issue proper identity cards.

The safai karmacharis demanded that a holiday be declared in a week for karmacharis working outside Raichur city to enable them to meet family members during holidays.

Commission secretary Madhuswamy, City Corporation Commissioner Jubin Mohapatra, and others were present.
