The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) Joint Action Committee (JAC) announced that the ‘RTC Protection Day’ protests, scheduled for July 7 and 8, will go ahead as planned.
The JAC met the APSRTC management, including the corporation’s Vice-Chairman and Managing Director N. Balasubrahmanyam, Executive Directors and others to discuss their demands at RTC House on Monday. Their demands included the withdrawal of the proposal to handover operation of electric buses to private entities, an increase in the number of buses, an immediate recruitment drive to fill vacant posts.
Addressing the media after the meeting, the JAC leaders pointed out that they did not receive an assurance from the State government that the maintenance, purchase and operations of electric buses would remain under the control of the APSRTC. Therefore, the protests will be held as planned, they said, adding that the employees would wear ‘demand badges’ while on duty.
Expressing their disappointment at the outcome of the meeting, JAC conveners Y. Srinivasa Rao and P. Damodara Rao said the protests would be intensified if the government and management failed to respond positively to their demands.
Along with their key demands, the JAC also highlighted issues faced by employees, including delays in payments of salaries to outsourced staff, administrative problems at depots, increasing workload due to staff crunch, and issues faced by employees and women passengers under ‘Stree Shakti’ scheme.
According to a press release from the JAC, the APSRTC management assured them that issues requiring government intervention would be placed before the State government, while those falling under the purview of the management would be discussed later.
