A 45-year-old murder case accused died due to illness while in police custody in Mahalakshmipuram on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Manjunath, who was arrested by the Mahalakshmi Layout police on April 28 in connection with the murder of a woman who was alone at her residence.

According to the police, Manjunath was suffering from acute pancreatic complications during questioning. While in custody, he complained of severe stomach pain from May 1 and was admitted to a hospital for treatment. As his condition deteriorated, he was later shifted to Victoria Hospital for advanced medical care.

The police said the accused was also suffering from liver-related ailments and diabetes. Despite treatment, he died at the hospital on May 3.

“It was not a custodial death per se. He succumbed to his prolonged illness, which aggravated while he was in custody,” a senior police officer said.

Following the death, the Mahalakshmi Layout police registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) case and initiated further proceedings. The police said they are awaiting the post-mortem report for further investigation.
