The restored statue of the former Chief Minister and Congress stalwart K. Kamaraj at Auxilium College intersection at Katpadi in Vellore was opened on Monday.
G.V. Selvam, vice-president, VIT, opened the restored statue, which was built in 1969. Residents and social activists in the area made a request to Mr. Selvam for the statue’s restoration after it was badly damaged.
As the area has many educational institutions, including government schools, students use the intersection to reach the campuses every day. Restoration of the statue of the Congress leader, who contributed to school education in the State, will help the younger generation know the rich past of the veteran Congressman.
Subsequently, restoration work was taken up under the guidance of Mr. Selvam, who also funded the work. Residents and educationists in the area welcomed the initiative. On the occasion, Mr. Selvam distributed free books and stationery items for school students.
