The Legislative Council on Monday night plunged into chaos, cutting short Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s reply to the Governor’s speech after an uncharitable remark by Congress member Nazeer Ahmed against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Heated moments were witnessed as Opposition and ruling party members engaged in intense arguments in the presence of the Chief Minister even after the House was adjourned. Just when frayed tempers threatened to turn physical, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil had to intervene to calm the members.
The BJP members took exception to the remarks and sought Mr. Ahmed’s suspension from the House and an apology. Even after Chairman Basavaraj Horatti expunged the remarks, he could not bring the House to order while the BJP members entered the well in protest, disrupting the Chief Minister’s speech that came to an end abruptly.
“I have told him that his remarks were not right and expunged them,” Mr. Horatti said, even as BJP members kept asking for his suspension and apology.
The Chief Minister’s reply was earlier also marred by frequent interruptions from the Opposition benches even as he defended his government’s criticism of the Centre. “Should we not say that ₹13,000 crore under the Jal Jeevan Mission is still due and ₹5,300 crore announced by the Centre for the Upper Bhadra project has not been released? Should we not ask for special grants of ₹5,495 crore given by the 15th Finance Commission or the ₹6,000 crore announced by the Centre for Bengaluru’s development?” he asked.
The Chief Minister pointed out that Mr. Modi had demanded the Centre’s share to be at 50% when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat.
