A flock of more than 30 Fulvous whistling ducks (Dendrocygna bicolor), a species rarely recorded in Kerala, has been spotted at the Venjali wetlands at Cherumukku near Tirurangadi in Malappuram district. This is the first reported sighting of the species in Malappuram.

The species was reported earlier from Kollam district. The bird is more commonly found in the wetlands of Assam and other northeastern States.

They reach Keralam around the beginning of the monsoon and usually return by October.

The sighting was made by birdwatchers Kabeerali P., teacher at PSMO College, Tirurangadi, and Fathima Sabeeha P.P., member of Malappuram Birders.

The Fulvous whistling duck can be confused with the Lesser whistling duck, which is common in the State’s wetlands. A blackish line along the back of the neck, a white patch on the throat, a creamy-white rump, and its larger body help distinguish the Fulvous whistling duck, said Mr. Kabeerali.

The species has long, stout, blue-grey legs and a grey bill. It is also known for its high-pitched whistling call. Males and females look similar, though males are slightly larger.

The Cherumukku wetlands have recorded several other waterbirds and migratory species. During the latest observation, 28 other species, including Cotton pygmy goose, Eurasian coot, Wire-tailed swallow and Glossy ibis, were also recorded.

Systematic waterbird surveys conducted over the past four years by the Bhoomithra Sena Club of PSMO College in association with the Social Forestry department, Malappuram Birders, Cherumukku Nattukaryam Koottayma, Friends of Nature, and Sincere Club of Cherumukku have recorded 70 to 80 bird species from the wetland.

The site has also recorded species such as the rare Grey-headed lapwing, Marsh harrier, Painted stork, Osprey, and Strawberry finch.

The permanent and seasonal waterbodies at Venjali provide food and shelter for migratory and resident birds, making Cherumukku an important stopover for birds travelling long distances.
