Rains lash Hyderabad after week-long heat, causing waterlogging at key junctions

Rains lashed several parts of Hyderabad on Thursday evening, bringing relief from the intense heat but catching many commuters off guard and leading to waterlogging and traffic congestion at several key junctions across the city in the night.

After nearly a week of sultry weather, conditions changed rapidly on Thursday evening as moderate to heavy showers swept through different localities.  Waterlogging and slow-moving traffic were reported from S.R. Nagar, Somajiguda, near Praja Bhavan, Maitrivanam Junction, Greenlands Flyover towards Begumpet, Banjara Hills, Doyens Colony, Erragadda, Begumpet and Secunderabad.

Traffic police personnel from the Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri commissionerates were deployed at major intersections to ensure smooth traffic movement and prevent congestion. Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams of the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) were also pressed into service to clear waterlogged stretches.

According to data from Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), as of 10 p.m., Quthbullapur recorded a rainfall of 37.5 mm followed by 30.5 mm in Moosapet, 27.8 mm in Balanagar, 26.5 mm in Maitrivanam, 24.3 mm in Srinagar Colony, 21.8 mm in Banjara Hills, 21.5 mm in Bowenpally, 21.3 mm in Secunderbad, 20.3 mm in Saroornagar, 19.3 mm in Musheerabad, 19 mm in Begumpet, 16.5 mm in LB Nagar, 12.3 mm in Mehdipatnam and 12 mm in Hayathnagar.
