The Republic Day flower show at Lalbagh Botanical Garden, centred around celebrated Kannada writer and thinker K.P. Poornachandra Tejaswi, attracted more than eight lakh visitors and generated close to ₹2.75 crore in revenue, the State Horticulture Department said.

The flower show was held from January 14 to January 26, as part of the Republic Day celebrations.

Last year’s Republic Day flower show at Lalbagh, themed on Adikavi Maharshi Valmiki, had recorded a total footfall of 4.75 lakh visitors and earned the Horticulture Department a revenue of ₹2.3 crore.

On the final day of the flower show, family members of Kuvempu and Tejaswi visited the flower show.

This year, a bookstore was also organised on the premises, featuring 54 titles authored by Tejaswi. The stall recorded sales of over 13,000 books during the exhibition, including 3,800 copies of Carvalho alone.

A total amount of ₹2.75 crore was collected during the event. Of this, over ₹2.46 crore was from entry tickets, while an additional ₹28,50,000 was collected from stalls, stores and other sources on the premises. The event saw a total footfall of 8,10,973 visitors, including 5,17,103 adult visitors and 2,08,166 students.

Flower waste to be converted into manure

The floral displays this year used approximately 35 lakh flowers sourced from across the State and outside. Of these, around nine lakh flowers used for decoration will be converted into compost and organic manure. The manure will be reused for cultivation within Lalbagh itself, reducing waste and promoting eco-friendly practices, officials from the department said.
