Farmers and farm labourers staged demonstrations in parts of Punjab on Thursday, demanding the withdrawal of the Electricity Amendment Bill, 2025, among other demands.
Under the banner of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), the farmers held demonstrations and submitted memorandums to Deputy Commissioners across the districts to support their demands. The farmers’ union warned the Central and State government that if their demands were not met, they would resort to ‘rail roko’ from December 20.
“The onus of the ‘rail-roko’ agitation shall be on the Punjab and Central government. The Central government is continuously attacking the federal structure of the country and interfering in the jurisdiction of the States, but the Punjab government is sitting silent for its own narrow political interests,” said Sarwan Singh Pandher, senior leader of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha.
He added that the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025, being brought by the Central government, will not be allowed to be implemented under any circumstances and the Punjab government should pass a resolution against this Bill in the State Assembly.
Suitable compensation
He said they have been waiting for suitable compensation after large-scale damage to lands, crops and houses in the recent floods. “An amount of ₹1 crore should be given to the family of each deceased person, while 100% amount should be given for the damaged houses. Compensation for damaged crop should be provided immediately and the entire loan of the flood-affected farmers should be waived off,” Mr. Pandher said.
