Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TGREDCO) plans to have a public Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) for every 25-30 kilometres on national and State highways. Restaurants, dhabas or other food outlets; spaces within 500 metres of an electric sub-station; government owned lands along the roadways are some of the places being considered. Managing Director of the Corporation, V. Anila, said that they plan to increase the public EVCS by setting them up at government offices, hospitals, schools, railway stations and other places in Tier I and II cities.

The locations in the city and along highways are yet to be approved. Around 1500 applications were received from private parties to set up the stations.

As of now, there are over 1,030 EVCS across Telangana, including around 600 in Hyderabad. TGREDCO aims to increase the public EVCS to 6,000 by 2030 and 12,000 by 2035. The number of charging stations and energy consumed increased from 2.60 million units (MU) in September last year to 10.15 MU in September this year. Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) drove the surge with 7.81 MU consumption for its EV bus fleet in September this year. TGSRTC’s charging stations are used only for the buses.

A space of around 650 square feet is needed to set up an EVCS. Two categories of infra is needed: EV charger, and upstream infrastructure including distribution transformer, cables, AC distribution boxes, civil works and others. Cost varies with the capacity of the charger. An EVCS with 60KW charger costs around ₹15 lakh, including ₹7 lakh for the charger and another ₹7 lakh for the upstream. Officials said that subsidy is provided under PM E-Drive is provided for setting up EVCS.

One of the needs of the people with EV is to know location of the charging stations, especially along highways for smoother planning of the journey. The officials said that a unified app is in the works which will have information on the public EVCS.
