The committee formed to demand a Karnataka High Court circuit bench in Shivamogga has announced a protest march in the city on May 30. Representatives from various organisations will participate in the march.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, senior advocate and committee president K. Basappa Gowda said the jatha would pass through prominent streets of the city. Several pro-people organisations and political parties have already extended their support to the cause.

“We are demanding a High Court bench in Shivamogga to serve the districts of Chikkamagaluru, Davangere, Chitradurga, and Shivamogga. Considering the large number of cases originating from this central region of the State, it deserves its own bench,” Mr. Gowda said.

He strongly opposed the proposal to bring Shivamogga under the purview of the proposed Mangaluru bench. “Without taking the opinion of the people of Shivamogga into consideration, the district has been included in the Mangaluru bench proposal. A bench in Mangaluru will not benefit the people of Shivamogga in any way,” he argued.

G.R. Raghavendra Swamy, president of the Shivamogga Bar Association, appealed to all pro-people organisations in the district to join the march in large numbers.
