The Thiruvananthapuram City police have instituted an inquiry into a lathicharge that occurred during the Onam celebrations held at the Nishagandhi auditorium on Sunday night.

The incident occurred during a concert by playback singer Vineeth Sreenivasan.

A group of police personnel resorted to the use of lathi allegedly without the approval of senior officers, according to preliminary findings. Visuals from the scene show a few youths being beaten harshly by the policemen, sparking allegations over the use of excessive force.

Official sources indicated the incident may have occurred while the police personnel were responding to complaints about the group purportedly misbehaving with women in the audience during the event.

Besides, the police deployment was evidently insufficient to manage the surge in the crowd, who had gathered at the venue to witness the valedictory programme of the week-long Onam celebrations organised by the State government in the State capital.
