The Kasaragod District Collector has ordered an investigation into the boiler explosion that destroyed the decor panel industries unit at Ananthapuram Industrial Estate, killing one worker and injuring about 10 others.

The explosion, which occurred on Monday night, claimed the life of 19-year-old Nazirul Ali from Udaiguri district in Assam and left several others with serious burns. At least three of the injured are reported to be in critical condition. Rescue teams swiftly moved the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.

In a statement, the District Collector said strict action would follow once the investigation establishes the cause of the accident. The probe has been handed over to the Chemical Emergency Response Centre (CHEMREC ) section of the Factories and Boilers department, Ernakulam, which will examine possible safety lapses and determine the reasons behind the blast.

The Collector said further measures will be taken based on the CHEMREC report and assured that those found violating safety norms would face stern action. The Collector added that detailed findings on the cause of the explosion will be made public only after the investigation report is received.

Security tightened

Meanwhile, the police have tightened security around the factory premises and entry has been restricted.

The factory operated full time. About 20 workers were on duty at the time of the blast. Around 300 people, mostly migrant workers, are employed at the unit.

The factory is just 500 metres from the historic Anathapura Lake temple. K. Janardhana Poojary, ward member of Puthige gram panchayat, said the windows and doors of houses within 300 metres were shattered.
